Replace your old single-paned windows using tempered or insulate glass to improve energy efficiency, reduce noise, and protect the original character of your home's older. A majority of homeowners with hand tools can repair the window pane. Alongside a replacement pane, the following tools are needed: latex glazing putty; Glazier's points; pliers and an electric heater to warm the old putty, if necessary. Remove any broken glass pieces that remain. This is best accomplished with the help of pliers but a flathead screwdriver may work in the pinch. Then, use a wooden chisel or putty knife take the remainder of the old putty from the frame and the sash. Be careful and slow, taking care not to break the current window sash. It is a good idea to do this on a stable ladder instead of the ground and to place someone on the sash to help keep it in place.

Make sure the window frame is ready to accept the new pane once you have removed the old putty. Measure the width and Replace window Pane height of the opening in the sash by subtracting 1/8 inch from each measurement (to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction). Bring these measurements to the nearest hardware store or home center, and replace Window pane have a piece of stock glass cut to size. Alternately, you can cut the glass yourself if you have the right tools.

After putting in the new pane after installing the new pane, put a tiny amount of caulking around the edges to seal it against weather. Then, you can install a glazier's pointing on each side of the frame to secure the pane in place. The points shouldn't be so tight as to cause friction between the frame and sash, but they also shouldn't be too loose.

Before applying the putty to the surface, knead thoroughly until it is soft and free from lumps. Then make it into pencil-sized strips. Apply the first strip to the corner of the frame, moving from one corner to the next so that it is smooth and even.

Glazier's Points

The glazier’s points are small triangular pieces of steel that allow glass to be secured to the frame without causing damage to the delicate surface. Learning how to use these little helpers is easy and could save you money on professional installation or the cost of buying new glass.

After the old putty as well as glazier's points are removed Clean the frame thoroughly with a utility knife to get rid of any remaining traces. If needed you can lightly sand the wood in the grooves of the rabbets to smooth rough spots. If you sand wood protect it with painter’s tape to prevent accidental damage.

Write down the dimensions of the frame. These measurements can be brought to a home center or hardware store and the new pane will be cut a bit smaller. This will ensure a snug fit and leave room for expansion and contraction.

Place the new window in the frame and press it into place firmly using your hand. Then use the point of your chisel, or the back of the putty knife to make a tap on the glazier's points, as shown in Figure 11. The glazier's point should be flush against the top edge of your pane and the shoulders should be just beneath that lip.

Apply a thin layer glazing compound on the rabbet grooves as well as the edges of new glass. This will protect and seal the edges. Allow it to dry and cure completely.

Install the new window sash after the glazing compound has dried. The first step is to coat the wood with a thick coat of linseed oil. This will prevent the newly-created putty from drying out and cracking when it absorbs moisture. Apply the coating using a brush this coat, or the point of the blade. Then use the chisel that is on the back of the putty tool or the back of the handle to gently smash the new sash or glazier's point into the grooves of the rabbet. Repeat this process every 10 inches around the frame's perimeter.

Putty

A baseball hit, a rock thrown in error, or a fallen tree can result in a cracked or cracked window. The majority of windows can be replaced by simply putting in a fresh piece. The glass is held in place with small clips made of metal called the glazier's pointed and putty, also called glazing compound. Remove the old pane and clean the area with the rag, a scraper that is a pull type or a wood chisel. Wear safety glasses and gloves while you do this work. If the window replacement cost is glued to the frame, you'll need to employ a heat gun in order to soften the adhesive before taking it off.

If you're planning to install the original sash in the future, take care to remove any pieces of molding that are used to secure the old pane. Then, sand the sash to ensure it's level and ready to be re-caulked. Once the sash is reinstalled, you can apply a silicone caulk to the glass. This will ensure that it won't leak over time or discolor.

Take out the glazing points in the rabbets. These are the grooves in the sash, which is where the glass is located. If they are hard to chisel, use an instrument such as a heatgun over them to allow them to soften before. If you're using a heat gun, be cautious not to cause damage to the sash or its railings by using the tool too close.

After the old points of glazing and putty have been removed, prepare a bed for the new pane. Roll a rope with glazing compound between your fingers, and make it around 1/2 inch thick. Then, press it into the rabbets, where the glass will sit. The glass must rest against the putty on both sides. If you need to, lightly tap your glass into the rabbet using your thumb.

If the new pane has a crack then you can seal it with a solvent-based glass glue or silicone caulk prior pressing it into the sash. Otherwise, you'll need to apply putty on the crack to form an impervious seal to keep water out. After the putty is dry, clean the oily film off the glass with a rag and allow it to dry completely prior to painting. If you paint before the putty is completely dry, it won't create a strong seal and may discolor or leak in time.

Paint

You may be concerned about replacing a damaged piece of glass. The truth is, replacing a single pane of glass doesn't need to be costly even if you do it your own. In fact, even a double-pane window can be replaced for a fraction of the cost of a professional.

If you are working on a large-sized window, make sure it is securely fixed to the frame. Using the proper tools and techniques to make this task relatively easy and speedy.

Once you're ready to begin taking off the old window pane by prying out the glazing points of metal that are connected to it. They are basically tiny metal triangles which function as "nails" that keep the window in within the frame of wood. They are placed under a bead of glazing putty that hardens into a solid, moulded wedge that holds the window firmly in place and conceals the points.

After removal of the old pane clean the frame and wood. Scrape off any paint and sand down the rabbet grooves, where the glazing points were. These should be sanded to bare wood, so that you can paint them the same color as the rest of the frame. After sanding, apply a layer of flax oil to the bare wood to help extend its lifespan.

Next, measure the dimensions of the window opening. You will need to measure the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the entire opening, as well as the thickness. To determine the exact dimensions of the new pane subtract 1/8 inch from both measurements. This will allow for seasonal changes in the glass. You can bring these measurements to a hardware store or home improvement store and have the glass cut for you.

Now, it's time to bed the new window pane. To do this, place the pane inside the frame and move it around until a 1/16 inch of putty remains between the edge of the glass and the sash on all four sides. Use a putty knife to smear the putty evenly, making sure that there isn't an excessive amount of excess putty in the corners and along the edges. When the putty dries, it can be painted with the same color as the frame to prevent water and air from leaking into the frame and causing fogging.Replacement-Windows-150x150.jpg
